Oboes

If you are new to band instruments, we have some great knowledge on what to look out for when buying an oboe! If you don't find what you are looking for on our site, please give us a call at (210-224-1010) Downtown or (210-525-1010) Babcock so that we can answer any questions you may have!

For us to serve you better, please consult your band director on the

preferred instrument so that we can get you the perfect instrument to satisfy everyone!

First: New, Used, or Rent? We offer all three choices. New is more reliable, sounds great, just costs a little more. Used is perfect for anyone starting out. Rent is also good for those who are not sure what instrument they would like to play. I am pleased to say that we offer all three choices.

Second: The old plastic vs. wood dispute? Now adays you can't go wrong because of the competition in today's market. There are high/low quality plastic and wood. Wood is a better investment if the player is wanting to pursue the art of oboe. Plastic lasts longer, doesn't crack, and can be roughed a little as what children do to instruments. Wood has a better sound quality but is more sensitive to damages. Beginners should start with plastic until maturity level of playing.

We recommend for beginners the:

Oboe: YOB 241 series student oboe

yob 241 at alamo music center

An economic ABS resin-body oboe that features a modified conservatoiry system, making it easier for beginners to play. The surprisingly precise intonation permits students to concentrate more on developing their own musical nuances. But there is nothing "student-like" about the rich and colorful sound. The 241 has a characteristically warm oboe tone, with a sound very close to that of a professional instrument, so even a complete beginner can quickly develop a beautiful tone.

The YOB-441 is made of the finest quality aged and seasoned grenadilla wood for a rich professional sound. This is the same material as used on our Custom models and has been carefully crafted in a similar manner. The size and placement of the toneholes is also the same, giving even and accurate intonation and making the 441 the most 'Professional' sounding intermediate model you will ever find.
