MAY 1991

"Every other major city in the country has a children's museum....why don't we? Let's just start one ourselves...it shouldn't be that hard..."

The San Antonio Children's Museum was founded by a group of dedicated volunteers who were committed to building a community space dedicated to early childhood development. Since opening its doors in September of 1995, more than two million visitors have explored three floors of hands-on exhibits that spark children's imagination and help them discover a world of knowledge. Dedicated to children ages 0-10 years, the museum's exhibits and programs are focused on early childhood learning, especially in the creative arts, sciences and early literacy.

In 2008, the museum launched a process of exhibit and program renovation. Three new permanent exhibits, the 1750 square foot HEB Kids' Market, the action-packed PowerBall Hall and the Tot Spot dedicated to infants and toddlers 0-36 months mark the museum's commitment to become a key resource in San Antonio for early childhood development.

The San Antonio Children’s Museum is dedicated to providing engaging hands-on experiences where Kids Play to Learn and Adults Learn to Play. The Museum is a unique and innovative educational resource dedicated to those we serve. Through interactive play, we inspire a journey of life-long learning, ultimately enriching lives and positively impacting the San Antonio community and beyond.

The San Antonio Children's museum's Operating Principles reflect how we as an organization want our staff to operate, individually and collectively. When staff openings occur, we look for new team members who demonstrate these principles. Our principles are critical to ensuring that we become a nationally-recognized Children's Museum.

Operating Principles

  • ACHIEVEMENT & EXCELLENCE

We are driven to create a Children’s Museum that is a premier educational resource for children, families, schools and enrichment programs in San Antonio. Through both our programs and partnerships, we seek to provide high quality services for children that blend play and learning to ensure that children meet their developmental and educational milestones. We work toward our short and long-term goals with a sense of passion and urgency.

  • CRITICAL THINKING

At SACM, we value thoughtful planning and analysis in our decision-making processes and are committed to putting forth our best work in both writing and speaking. We strive to anticipate questions and challenges ahead of time and to plan accordingly. Despite our best efforts, we also know that not every initiative will be a success; we value both our successes and failures to draw lessons for the future.

  • FOCUS ON QUALITY

We are driven to exceed customer expectations in all of our interactions with parents, caregivers and educators. We look to every interaction, big or small, as an opportunity to educate children, influence parents and caregivers, and to inform the public.

  • OPTIMISM

We operate with a sense of possibility, continually striving for new and better ways to reach our goals.

  • PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

We assume personal responsibility for achieving our goals. We persevere in the face of challenges, seek resources to ensure the best outcomes, and work to exceed our personal expectations.

  • TEAMWORK

We operate with a shared sense of purpose as we recognize that there are times that the needs of the organization are more important than our individual interests. We understand that every staff member is an ambassador for the museum, representing the best interests of the organization to the public. We operate with a shared sense of purpose as we pursue both our individual and collective goals. We value and respect one another’s strengths, we recognize one another’s contributions, and we support one another in the pursuit of our goals.
