If you are new to band instruments, we have some great knowledge on what to look out for when buying into the saxophone family: Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Berry Saxaphones! If you don't find what you are looking for on our site, please give us a call at (210-224-1010) Downtown or (210-525-1010) Babcock so that we can answer any questions you may have!
For us to serve you better, please consult your band director on the
preferred instrument so that we can get you the perfect instrument to satisfy everyone!
First: New, Used, or Rent? We offer all three choices. New is more reliable, sounds great, just costs a little more. Used is perfect for anyone starting out. Rent is also good for those who are not sure what instrument they would like to play. I am pleased to say that we offer all three choices.
Second: Size? Most beginners start off with a student model alto saxophone. The saxophone comes in many different sizes, models and types (Sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass etc.) The more extreme sizes are not generally a good idea to start learning on. The high instruments (soprano and sopranino) can be harder to get a pleasing tone and good intonation (intune-ness). The lower instruments (baritone and bass), apart from being more expensive, may be harder to blow and finger, especially for children or small adults. Most beginners choose alto or tenor, but for small children a tenor is usually too big. Some instruments have easier fingering for small hands than others (ergonomics), so if you really want to play tenor and find it difficult, try a few makes to see if there is an easier one for you.
We recommend for beginners the:
Alto Saxophone: Yamaha YAS200AD/YAS23
All Yamaha saxophones feature an adjustable thumb rest to allow for precise and comfortable hand and fingering position. Yamaha saxophone keys are not simply shaped and positioned according to mechanical necessity; the entire system is designed from the player's perspective, with emphasis on comfort, speed, and overall playability. The natural feel of the keys eliminates the need to adapt to an unnatural or uncomfortable key layout.
