Yamaha

Believe it or not, Yamaha’s first model was an upright piano, constructed by Torakusu Yamaha and unveiled in 1900. The instrument was the first piano manufactured in Japan, rather than imported from Europe, and paved the way for the inception of the Yamaha Corporation, which then introduced its first grand piano two years later.

Style isn’t the only difference between upright and grand pianos: action varies between the two instruments. With an upright piano, the strings and soundboard are positioned vertically within the cabinet, extending from top to bottom. The keyboard sits perpendicularly.

Once a player places their fingers on the keyboard, spring-based action controls the hammer and damper, rather than the gravity-based motion inside a grand piano. For sound and practice, uprights include three pedals: soft, on the left, to reduce the sound; muffler, in the center, which ultimately acts as a mute; and sustain, located on the right, to lengthen pitches and deliver the tonal qualities of a grand piano.

With this general arrangement, Yamaha upright pianos have been a mainstay in homes and music schools for over a century. Durability keeps them in rotation, both from the piano’s action to the exterior. Since 1967, Yamaha has sold over 4 million upright models across the globe, and their size, quality and strength make them preferred among music schools.

Yamaha’s current lineup of upright pianos includes the following series:

  • U-Series: Yamaha crafted the U-Series for tone, precision and responsiveness, designing these pianos for professionals, teachers and music schools wanting a quality practice instrument. In turn, the U-Series leads Yamaha’s lineup of uprights.
  • YUS Series: Yamaha brought over features from its Flagship CF Series, from hand-wound strings and concert-quality felt to aspects that improve voicing and tone regulation. The result sounds similar to a grand piano but delivers it all in the size and convenience of an upright.
  • b Series: Yamaha borrowed from its U-Series to create the b Series, offering more compact upright pianos that resonate and suit beginner to professional-level players.
  • P22: Using hand-selected solid spruce, P22 upright pianos uphold Yamaha’s legacy of responsiveness and resonance and are built for everyday use in music schools, practice rooms and institutions where the instrument will be played regularly.
  • Gallery Collection: Visually, the Gallery Collection is inspired by 19th century European uprights. Yamaha equips these models with a higher-end soundboard for a superior, richer and more balanced tone.
