Martin Road Series: Modern & Retro Dreadnoughts

Chris and Cooper from Alamo Music break down the refreshed Road Series from C.F. Martin & Co., putting two closely related dreadnoughts head to head: the Martin D13E Retro and the Martin DC13E Modern.

Both guitars are designed to be stage-ready, affordable alternatives to Martin’s U.S.-made models—but they’re built for very different types of players.

What’s New with the Road Series?

Martin has split the Road Series into two clear lanes:

  • Retro models focus on traditional looks and all-solid wood construction

  • Modern models lean into cutaways, updated styling, and added durability for gigging

Every model includes electronics and a gig bag, making these guitars easy to take straight from the case to the stage.

What the D13E Retro and DC13E Modern Share

At their core, these two guitars have a lot in common:

  • Dreadnought body shape

  • Solid spruce tops

  • Martin E1 electronics with onboard tuner

  • Comfortable Performing Artist neck profile

  • Designed for live performance and everyday play

Where They Really Differ

D13E Retro
This is the more traditional choice. It’s all solid wood, with walnut back and sides, no cutaway, and classic Martin-inspired styling. If you love the feel and tone of a vintage-style Martin and want maximum value for the money, this one makes a lot of sense.

DC13E Modern
The Modern version is built for players who need flexibility. The cutaway gives easy access to the upper frets, and the fine veneer Koa back and sides add strength and stability. Modern cosmetics and Ratio tuners round out a guitar that’s clearly aimed at working musicians.

Solid Wood vs Fine Veneer

All-solid wood guitars tend to open up and sound better over time, which is why many players prefer them. Fine veneer construction, on the other hand, is stronger and more consistent—great for travel, touring, and changing environments. Neither is “wrong”; they’re just built for different needs.

Final Thoughts

Most traditional Martin fans will probably gravitate toward the D13E Retro for its all-solid build and classic vibe. The DC13E Modern, however, fills a real gap in Martin’s lineup by offering a cutaway dreadnought that’s ready for modern playing styles.

In the end, it’s a simple choice: classic tone and construction, or modern features and playability.
