You’ve Never Seen Spruce Like This: Ultra-Rare, Mirror-Topped Taylor Customs

You’ve Never Seen Spruce Like This: Ultra-Rare, Mirror-Topped Taylor Customs

At Alamo Music, we’ve been teasing something special—and it’s finally here.

Straight from a custom build session at the Taylor factory, we’re proud to unveil two jaw-droppingly unique mirror guitars that are, quite literally, one-of-a-kind.

These guitars feature what Taylor is calling striped Sitka spruce tops—but the real kicker? No one, not even Taylor’s top luthiers, knows how this incredible patterning happened. The striping appeared only after their proprietary torrefaction process. The result is not only visually stunning but sonically rich: old-growth Sitka spruce with eye-catching depth and exceptional resonance.

We paired these rare tops with luxurious tonewoods: one guitar features flamed maple with cocobolo binding, and the other flips the formula with cocobolo back and sides framed in figured maple. Each is meticulously detailed with variated ebony fingerboards, custom inlays, and elegant finishing touches.

Why does this matter?
Cocobolo is quickly becoming nearly impossible to source, and wood of this caliber—especially the deeply flamed maple—is exceedingly rare. These are collector-grade instruments with boutique craftsmanship and a story behind every detail.

Tonal Personalities
These aren’t just pretty faces. Cocobolo offers deep bass, sparkling highs, and complex overtones—ideal for players seeking rich, full-spectrum sound. Maple, often misunderstood, actually delivers a more neutral, balanced tone that mirrors your playing style, making it a favorite for orchestral instruments and articulate fingerstyle.

Want to hear the difference? Watch the full video for an in-depth demo and discussion on tone, design choices, and how we selected each piece of wood by hand.

Stay tuned and keep playing.
