Why Restore Your Piano

Acoustic pianos can last centuries with the right care. Especially if you used to play but no longer do or inherited an instrument from a family member, it may have been sitting in a room - or even in a storage space - for years. Humidity, ordinary wear and tear, and neglect all affect a piano's action and appearance, influencing how it plays, what kind of sound it makes and what it looks like in your home.

Piano restoration can take a couple of forms:

  • Refurbished: The piano is restored to a like-new condition in terms of playability, with interior parts replaced or repaired. The exterior may also be refinished in the process.
  • Reconditioning: This is essentially an upgrade for the piano with minimal replacement parts. During this process, strings may be untwisted, and the felt may be replaced, but a technician may also recommend replacing hammers, pins, and damaged strings.

Especially if you're looking to play again or sell your piano, here's why you should consider restoration:

  • Cost over cost, you spend less restoring an older piano than buying a new one.
  • Especially if you have an older, antique piano, these instruments were built to last and may simply need some upgrades to be playable again.
  • Restoration lengthens the piano's lifespan, sometimes as much as 50 to 70 years.
  • Restoration can drastically improve the instrument's sound quality, making playing more enjoyable again.
  • Restoration can improve the piano's action. Normal wear and tear can throw off the coordination among the piano's thousands of parts, impacting how it responds, the sound and ability to play dynamics and articulations. These changes are gradual but may be noticed with time.

Getting Your Piano Restored and Reconditioned

Alamo Music Center provides piano restoration and reconditioning services in a few locations. Here's where your piano can be assessed and restored:

  • San Antonio: We're the San Antonio area's premier piano dealer. Not only do we carry new and used instruments, but we aim to help you get the most out of the piano you currently own. We manage two stores in the city. Contact either location to learn about having your piano restored and reconditioned and what you need to do to get the process started. Our San Antonio locations review all piano brands, including Yamaha, Kawai, Baldwin, Steinway & Sons, Pearl River and others.
  • Austin: Alamo Music Center is a factory-authorized Kawai dealer. Not only do we provide wholesale pricing and a wide range of acoustic and digital instruments, but we can service your Kawai piano, including reconditioning and restoration. Due to the quality put into the construction, Kawai pianos are designed to last for decades. Whether yours has been in storage or hasn't been used in several years, get it back to playing condition with our Austin location's services.
  • St. Louis: Alamo Music Center acknowledges the importance of not only having a piano dealer close by but a reputable, reliable center for having it serviced. We set up a Kawai showroom in the St. Louis region for this purpose. If you own a Kawai grand or upright that needs to be restored in some form, contact us to learn more about what we can do.

Have an older piano that doesn't play or look like it used to? Fill out a form above to learn more, or give one of our locations a call today to hear about what we can do.
