At the heart of this year's competition lies the Shigeru Kawai SK-EX Concert Grand Piano, an instrument that represents the zenith of piano artistry. Contestants from across the globe will fly to San Antonio to compete for the $30,000 Gold prize, The Shigeru Kawai SK-EX is not just an instrument; it's a storyteller, weaving tales through every note and turn of phrase.

"El Colibrí y la Cempasúchil": A Musical Tribute by Dr. Aaron Prado at The Gurwitz 2024

Dr. Aaron Prado, a distinguished figure in the San Antonio music scene, composed a special piece for Round III. His work, “El Colibrí y la Cempasúchil” (The Hummingbird and the Marigold), draws inspiration from an Aztec legend, beautifully blending Mexican and Hispanic cultural themes. This composition is  part of the Third Round , featuring elements like the traditional leona bass. Read more about Prado’s piece here.

Finalists will add their personal flair to this piece, crafting original cadenzas that reflect their interpretations of the legend, showcasing their creativity and virtuosity. This initiative, generously underwritten by Pauline and Randolf Glickman, not only showcases individual talent but also celebrates the rich cultural heritage, making The Gurwitz 2024 a fusion of competition and cultural storytelling.

Competition Highlight: Round Four with the Mexico City Philharmonic

Round Four of the competition presents a notable achievement, featuring the entirety of the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra under the guidance of the esteemed conductor Scott Yoo. This collaboration is a noteworthy highlight, bringing about 80 professional musicians to San Antonio and providing an extraordinary opportunity for the finalists. In this round, three finalists will each perform a challenging piano concerto from a selection including works by Beethoven, Grieg, Liszt, and others. This collaboration not only showcases the exceptional talents of the competitors but also highlights the competition's commitment to providing a global platform for musical excellence.
