Baldwin
Show FiltersConcert halls to practice rooms, the clarity of a Baldwin piano rings out, delivering supreme expressiveness and dynamic quality. Today, the piano company with over 100 years of history offers quality upright and grand models for students and professional players.
Background
The company's history goes back to Dwight Hamilton Baldwin, a reed organ and violin teacher who opened a music store in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1862. Over the next three decades, Baldwin turned into one of the region's top retailers and then decided to manufacture its own instruments, striving for the highest quality. By the 1890s, Baldwin sold it first branded upright piano and followed that with a grand model in 1895.
Following these early advances, Baldwin pianos started winning top awards at exhibitions, which helped solidify the company's reputation as one of the leading piano manufacturers. Building off this success, Baldwin was conducting business internationally, shipping its instruments to 32 countries and managing multiple U.S. divisions.
As with most musical instrument businesses, Baldwin had to shift its operations during World War II, during which it built aircraft parts. However, this production wasn't a blip on the company's radar. These manufacturing practices were retained following the war and made their way into Baldwin's now-signature 41-ply maple pinblock.
Business increased during the second half of the 20th century, and through this momentum, Baldwin launched multiple innovations, including its definitive SD10 Concert Grand. Into the 21st century, Gibson Brands acquired Baldwin and assisted the piano company with building a factory in China.
Today, Baldwin's product line encompasses the following:
- Grand Pianos: Baldwin grand and semi-concert grand pianos have established a reputation for their impeccably clear tone and broad dynamic and tonal spectrum. Included within this range is the Baldwin Professional Series, offering six piano sizes.
- Upright Pianos: Even for a practice piano, you want quality, and Baldwin delivers with its uprights ranging from the Acrosonic Console to the 52-inch Concert Vertical. Keeping them above the competition are tonewoods selected for their warmth and exactingly manufactured components.
